For the first time since its founding in 1983 by N T Rama Rao, the TDP has decided not to hold its annual conclave this year.
Speaking sombrely after the party’s extended state executive meeting at NTR Bhavan on Tuesday, Chandrababu Naidu said, “We could not celebrate Mahanadu in May because there were byelections.
If we decide to organise it now, we would need at least three more months.
So the party felt that Mahanadu 2012 should be clubbed with Mahandu 2013.
” As per party convention, the Mahanadu ought to have been held during May 27-29, May 28 being Rama Rao’s birth anniversary.
But those dates this year clashed with the byelection campaign for 18 Assembly and one Lok Sabha seat.
So the conclave was put off until after the byelections.
But given that the party received a drubbing in the byelections, there was little enthusiasm for the stocktaking conclave when the party executive commenced its two-day sitting Monday.
Party leaders admitted in private that the mood in the party is despondent right now.
In Telangana, where the party used to once boast of an elaborate network of dedicated cadres, the party has bitten the dust in byelection after byelection.
That cup of woe was topped with a poor show in the byelections in coastal Andhra and Rayalaseema last month.
Party leaders felt that Mahanadu ought to be a celebration, but they were unable to summon up any joy right now.
Moreover, the defection to the YSR Congress of Kodali Srivenkateswara Rao alias Nani, dampened spirits further, especially because he represents Gudivada in the Assembly, a seat once held by late N T Rama Rao.
One TDP leader said, “That constituency is sacred to us, and it doesn’t feel right that it no more belongs to us.
” Last year’s Mahanadu was not a good experience for the TDP as it marked the beginning of the intensification of the cold war between NTR’s son N Harikrishna and sonin- law Chandrababu Naidu.
In a Freudian slip, deputy chief minister Damodar Rajanarasimha has admitted that he nurtured the ambition of becoming the chief minister of the state.
“If I have the blessings of Madam Sonia Gandhi and if fate so desired, I could become the chief minister,” he said in at Adilabad.
Rajanarasimha, after his elevation as deputy chief minister, is learnt to be harbouring the desire to become chief minister one day.
This was said to be one reason why he did not move closely with the chief minister in the days immediately following his elevation.
However, he made amends following a directive from the party high command
Gudivada MLA Kodali Venkateswara Rao alias Nani, who was suspended from Telugu Desam Party after he met YSRCP honorary president Vijayalakshmi and party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy in Chanchalguda jail on Monday, has a mission to accomplish.
The MLA, sources close to him said, has evolved a plan to tour all the districts in the state to target Telugu Desam chief N Chandrababu Naidu. For that, a massive public meeting is planned in Gudivada in the coming week and Nani would lash out at Naidu . The MLA would enter Gudivada on the meeting day and his followers and YSRCP activists would organize a massive welcome rally on the occasion.
Sources claim that, ”TD leader and Rajya Sabha MP N Harikrishna and Junior NTR knew about the mission of Nani, but they are maintaining silence over it”.When The Hans India contacted Nani over phone, the MLA said “I did not leave the party. Babu hatched a plan to send me out. The media close to TD chief aired false news against me”. He said that he had his own plans to take on Naidu and he will come out publicly at right time and occasion.
Telugu Desam, he said has been routed from all coastal districts. No MP seat has been won by party in five districts from Krishna to Srikalulam except Machilipatnam and that too with just 16,000 votes majority polled from Gudivada segment. He said he won by 24,000 votes majority in the election and it was because of his personal clout in Gudivada.
Sources said, “Nani has also decided to mount an attack on all fronts against Naidu including divulging the truth in dethronement of NTR ”. He told his associates, “NTR had no time to explain the conspiracy done by Naidu against him because of health problems. I would put all the details before public”. He argued before his friends, “I did not resort to any anti-party activity so far except meeting Vijayalakshmi.”
